By Sharon Akuboh

Nigeria and Portugal have taken significant steps towards strengthening their long-standing diplomatic and economic ties following high-level engagements between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the Portuguese Government and members of the Nigerian community in Lisbon.

The strategic meetings, held on the sidelines of the EurAfrican Forum in Cascais, underscored a renewed commitment by both countries to broaden cooperation in key sectors capable of driving economic growth, regional stability and sustainable development.

During bilateral talks with Portugal’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Professor Paulo Rangel, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu described the relationship between both nations as one built on mutual respect and shared interests, while expressing Nigeria’s readiness to deepen collaboration in areas of trade and investment, renewable energy, maritime security, digital technology, agriculture, education, defence cooperation and capacity development.

Both ministers also explored institutional frameworks aimed at strengthening diplomatic engagement, including plans to establish a Nigeria-Portugal Joint Commission to facilitate regular political consultations and expand bilateral cooperation.

The discussions further reviewed progress on the proposed Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) and the Double Taxation Agreement, two key initiatives expected to enhance commercial activities, improve connectivity and create a more favourable investment climate for businesses in both countries.

In addition, the two governments reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting peace, regional security and sustainable development through stronger collaboration under the Africa-European Union Partnership.

Beyond government-to-government discussions, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu used the visit to engage members of the Nigerian community in Lisbon, applauding their positive contributions to the economic and social development of both Nigeria and Portugal.

She assured Nigerians living in Portugal of the Federal Government’s continued commitment to safeguarding their welfare through improved consular services and stronger diplomatic support.

The Minister encouraged members of the diaspora to remain united, uphold Nigeria’s image through exemplary conduct and continue investing their knowledge, skills and resources in the country’s development.

She noted that Nigerians abroad remain critical stakeholders in advancing the nation’s economic diplomacy and foreign policy objectives, describing the diaspora as an invaluable bridge for investment, innovation and international partnerships.

The Lisbon engagements reinforce Nigeria’s determination to expand strategic alliances across Europe while leveraging the immense potential of its diaspora to accelerate national development and strengthen international cooperation.
