Nigeria Reacts to US Visa Restrictions

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed concern over the recent decision by the United States Government to limit the validity of non-immigrant visas for Nigerian citizens to three months with single entry. This decision affects B1/B2, F, and J visa categories, impacting Nigerian travelers, students, professionals, and families.

The Nigerian government views this development as placing a disproportionate burden on its citizens, particularly those seeking academic opportunities, engaging in legitimate business, visiting loved ones, and contributing to cultural and educational exchanges. The decision appears to be misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect that should guide bilateral engagements between friendly nations.

While acknowledging the sovereign right of every country to determine its immigration policies, Nigeria respectfully urges the United States to reconsider this decision in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities. Diplomatic engagements are ongoing, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains committed to pursuing the resolution of this matter in a fair and equitable manner.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, emphasized the importance of maintaining good relations between nations and upholding the values of mutual interest.

The Nigerian government remains committed to finding a resolution that reflects fairness and upholds the values of mutual interest. Diplomatic efforts will continue to ensure that the rights of Nigerian citizens are protected and respected.
