Migration is one of the most complex human stories of our time. It is a story of movement, hope, opportunity and resilience, but also one that can expose individuals and communities to misinformation, exploitation, trafficking, health challenges and sophisticated forms of fraud.
In Nigeria, where migration continues to attract significant public interest, the need for accurate, balanced and responsible reporting has therefore become increasingly important.
It was against this backdrop that the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Nigeria strengthened their partnership with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) designed to deepen cooperation in migration reporting, media advocacy, communication and capacity building.
The agreement, signed in Abuja during a high-level engagement between the leadership of both organisations, marks a significant step towards equipping Nigerian journalists with the knowledge and skills required to report migration issues with greater accuracy, sensitivity and professional responsibility.
Beyond Headlines: The Media’s Role
For the NUJ, the partnership goes beyond the signing of an agreement. It is an opportunity to strengthen the capacity of journalists across Nigeria to understand the increasingly complex dimensions of migration and communicate them effectively to the public.
Speaking at the engagement, NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, stressed the importance of closer collaboration between the media and IOM, particularly in ensuring that journalists are better prepared to report migration issues accurately and responsibly.
He underscored the powerful role of the media in creating public awareness, identifying early warning signs of migration-related challenges and confronting misinformation.
According to him, migration reporting must not focus only on the movement of people, but should also give adequate attention to the experiences, opportunities and challenges associated with migration, including issues such as malnutrition and drug abuse.
The NUJ President welcomed the MoU as an opportunity to create more avenues for journalists across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to acquire relevant knowledge and professional skills for effective migration reporting.
The message is clear: journalists cannot adequately report what they do not sufficiently understand.
IOM: Journalists Are Critical Partners
For IOM Nigeria, the media remains an indispensable partner in communicating reliable information and shaping public understanding of migration.
The Chief of Mission of IOM Nigeria, Ms. Sharon Dimanche, emphasised the importance of working closely with journalists, describing them as key partners in communicating credible information to the public.
In an era where information travels within seconds and social media can amplify both facts and falsehoods, the responsibility of journalists becomes even greater.
Dimanche stressed the importance of accurate, balanced and responsible reporting, noting that effective communication can contribute significantly to a better understanding of migration and help counter misinformation.
She also drew attention to the growing sophistication of online and social-media fraud, particularly scams that target people seeking migration opportunities.
The warning is particularly relevant in an environment where unsuspecting individuals can fall victim to fraudulent migration agents and scammers who exploit people’s aspirations for better opportunities abroad.
Telling the Complete Migration Story
One of the significant outcomes expected from the new partnership is a broader approach to migration reporting.
The discussions highlighted the importance of reporting not only migration challenges but also safe migration, the benefits of migration, durable solutions, emergency situations, health concerns and issues affecting migrants and host communities.
This represents an important shift from simply reporting migration as a crisis or security issue.
Behind every migration statistic is a human being—with a story, a family, an aspiration and, sometimes, a difficult experience.
Responsible journalism has the capacity to bring these human stories to the forefront while providing audiences with the facts they need to make informed decisions.
From Agreement to Action
The Abuja engagement featured an overview of the MoU and its areas of collaboration before the formal signing by the leadership of both organisations and the exchange of signed documents.
But perhaps the real significance of the agreement will be measured by what happens after the signing ceremony.
The partnership provides a framework for continued cooperation in media advocacy, communication, professional capacity building and improved reporting of migration-related issues.
An interactive session also provided journalists with an opportunity to engage directly with IOM representatives, ask questions and seek clarification on issues surrounding migration.

A Partnership With Wider Impact
The NUJ-IOM partnership comes at a time when the media landscape is undergoing rapid transformation.
Traditional newsrooms now compete with social media platforms where unverified information can reach thousands of people before professional journalists have had an opportunity to establish the facts.
Migration is particularly vulnerable to such misinformation because of the desperation and expectations often associated with the search for opportunities outside one’s immediate environment.
For Nigerian journalists, the new partnership offers an opportunity to strengthen their role as trusted sources of information while helping citizens distinguish genuine migration opportunities from dangerous schemes.
For IOM, stronger engagement with the media provides an avenue to reach wider audiences and ensure that accurate information about migration is accessible to the public.
Ultimately, the success of the MoU will depend on sustained implementation, regular training, information sharing and continued dialogue between the two institutions.
A New Chapter for Migration Journalism
The signing of the MoU may have been completed with an exchange of documents and a group photograph, but its implications could extend far beyond the event venue.
