In line with Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has granted state pardon to eight individuals, including five posthumously.

Those granted pardon are Eze Nwiboko Obodo Onyike (posthumous), Edigbo Agu (posthumous), Akponwe Ogalegu (posthumous), Ugadu Ofim (posthumous), Nwangbo Idoko (posthumous), Ifeanyi Nwamini, Hyacinth Nwigwe, and Eze Ekene.

Governor Nwifuru announced the decision during his statewide New Year broadcast to the people of Ebonyi State.

According to him, the posthumous pardon was granted to clear the names of the deceased, restore dignity to their memories, and promote healing within their families and communities.

“For the individuals who are no longer alive, this pardon is posthumous. It is granted to clear their names, restore dignity to their memory, and bring peace to their families and communities,” the Governor stated.

He explained that the pardon extended to those still alive was given as an opportunity for reform and reintegration into society. “For those who are living, this pardon is extended with the expectation of renewed responsibility. Mercy does not excuse wrongdoing, but it opens the door to reform, reintegration, and a better path forward,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Governor disclosed that the Ebonyi State Government has procured three new aircraft, which are expected to arrive in the state before the end of the month, as part of efforts to boost economic activities.

He said the initiative, to be operated under Ebonyi Air, is aimed at opening up the state to investors, improving connectivity, and reducing travel time and cost. “Reliable air transport makes it easier for investors to do business, for professionals to move in and out of the State, and for our people to connect with other parts of the country and beyond,” Nwifuru said.

He noted that the airline would support business growth, promote tourism, attract investment, and create jobs, while positioning Ebonyi State as economically competitive. “By improving connectivity, we are creating conditions that support trade, investment, and job creation, while making our State more accessible and competitive,” he added.

Governor Nwifuru also announced plans to commence the establishment of a modern cement factory in the state, leveraging Ebonyi’s abundant limestone deposits.

According to him, the project will help stop the long-standing practice of transporting raw materials out of the state for processing. “Our goal is to add value here at home. By processing our limestone within Ebonyi State, we keep jobs, skills, and income within our communities,” he said.

Reflecting on the achievements of his administration, the Governor said his government has made significant investments in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and human capital development across the state.

He highlighted the construction and rehabilitation of roads in all local government areas, renewal of Abakaliki metropolis, improved rural connectivity, and delivery of bridges and other flagship infrastructure projects. “Infrastructure creates access, but access must lead to opportunity,” the Governor emphasized.

Governor Nwifuru commended the people of Ebonyi State, traditional rulers, political leaders, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their encouragement and support.

He reaffirmed his commitment to implementing policies and projects that would have direct and positive impact on the lives of Ebonyi people, assuring that his administration remains focused on inclusive growth and sustainable development.
