The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, has commended the Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for what it described as remarkable strides in infrastructure development across the nation’s capital, while urging the administration to address environmental sanitation, improve electricity supply, and provide affordable housing for civil servants.

The position formed part of the resolutions reached at the Chapter’s Congress held on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council Secretariat in Utako, Abuja.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, members applauded the ongoing road construction projects across the FCT, noting that the developments have improved connectivity and eased the movement of residents within the capital city.

The Congress also praised the expansion of the railway system connecting the city centre to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, describing the project as a major milestone in strengthening public transportation and enhancing commuters’ convenience.

While acknowledging the achievements recorded by the FCT Administration, the women journalists expressed concern over the growing challenge of indiscriminate refuse dumps in parts of Abuja, particularly in Jabi, and appealed to the administration to intensify efforts towards environmental sanitation to preserve the city’s status as Nigeria’s capital.

On electricity supply, the Congress urged the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to improve its supervisory role and ensure more efficient service delivery to residents.

The association equally welcomed the noticeable decline in incidents of the notorious “one chance” criminal activities in the FCT, commending security agencies for their sustained efforts. It, however, called for stronger security measures to completely eradicate the menace and guarantee the safety of residents.

NAWOJ FCT further appealed to the FCT Minister to introduce affordable housing schemes for civil servants as part of measures to improve their welfare and living conditions.

On the nation’s security situation, the Congress called on security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted students from Oyo State and all other victims of kidnapping across the country, while urging government at all levels to strengthen measures aimed at protecting the lives and property of Nigerians.

Reviewing the state of the association, Congress commended the Executive Committee led by Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang for its commitment, dedication and achievements since assuming office.

Members unanimously passed a vote of confidence on the leadership of the Chapter, encouraging the Executive Committee to remain focused, united and committed to promoting the welfare of members and advancing the objectives of the association.

The Congress also reaffirmed NAWOJ FCT’s commitment to upholding professionalism, promoting responsible journalism, advocating good governance and contributing meaningfully to national development.
