Sixth Legislature : ECOWAS Parliament Opens 2025 2nd Ordinary Session

The ECOWAS Parliament has opened its 2025 Second Ordinary Session, with a call for collective action to address regional challenges.

The parliament celebrated its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter century of promoting regional integration and democratic governance.

The parliament’s first Deputy Speaker, Rt. Honourable Jibrin Barau, highlighted the progress made, including democratic gains in Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea’s planned return to democratic rule.

The parliament strongly condemned the recent military coup in Guinea-Bissau, calling it an unacceptable assault on democracy.

The parliament will review the 2026 Consolidated Community Budget, focusing on programs that foster stability, development, and improve the well-being of West Africans.

The parliament emphasized the importance of regional integration, urging member states to strengthen cohesion and give citizens a sense of belonging.

The region has made progress in democratic governance, with Côte d’Ivoire’s peaceful presidential election and Guinea’s planned return to democratic rule.

The parliament acknowledged persistent challenges, including insecurity, economic crises, climate change, and fragile democratic transitions.

The ECOWAS Parliament will continue to assume its leadership role in promoting dialogue, inclusive governance, and regional integration.

The parliament has participated in international conferences, sharing perspectives on global issues and promoting West African interests.

The parliament will strengthen partnerships with sister institutions and development partners to address regional challenges.

The parliament renewed its commitment to building a West Africa where democracy thrives, peace is sustainable, and citizens prosper in unity and dignity.
