SSDC, Police Seal Pact to Boost Security, Development in South-South

The South-South Development Commission (SSDC) has sealed a partnership with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to strengthen security and accelerate economic development in the region.

The agreement was reached in Abuja during a courtesy visit by SSDC Managing Director, Ms. Usoro Akpabio, to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, at Force Headquarters.

Akpabio described the South-South as Nigeria’s oil and gas hub and a major trade gateway, but noted that insecurity, ranging from militancy and piracy to pipeline vandalism, cultism and communal conflicts, continues to threaten stability.

She emphasized that sustainable development cannot be achieved without strong policing support.

“Security is the foundation upon which economic growth and social progress are built. We need robust police collaboration to ensure the smooth execution of our programmes,” she said.

The SSDC boss outlined strategies to tackle insecurity through youth engagement, empowerment and community development. She urged the Police to partner with the Commission in intelligence sharing, community policing, peacebuilding, early warning systems and civic education.

Akpabio also proposed the establishment of an SSDC–NPF Liaison Desk and pledged support for the Police Officers Wives Association (POWA), stressing that officer welfare directly impacts safer communities.

Responding, IGP Egbetokun commended the initiative and pledged the Force’s full backing. He highlighted key areas for collaboration, including the protection of critical infrastructure, expansion of community policing, combating cybercrime and upgrading police facilities such as station lighting in the South-South.

“The Nigeria Police Force recognizes the vital link between security and development. We are committed to providing the framework necessary for SSDC to deliver on its mandate to the people of the South-South,” the IGP emphasized.
