The Coalition of Civil Society Groups for Peace, Security, Good Governance, Equity and Justice (CCSG-PSGEJ), led by its National Coordinator, Comrade James Okoronkwo, has been following recent public discussions and media reports concerning the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon.
Benjamin Kalu.On the Allegations: Need for Fairness and Institutional Clarity
After reviewing publicly available information and the relevant statutory frameworks, our Coalition believes that the issues raised regarding Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu’s NYSC and Law School records should be addressed through proper institutional channels rather than through public speculation.

Institutional Verification: We note that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), as the statutory custodian of service records, reportedly conducted a verification exercise in 2023 which affirmed the authenticity of the Deputy Speaker’s discharge certificate. We encourage reliance on such institutional processes for clarification.
Professional Standing: Admission to the Nigerian Bar follows a rigorous process overseen by the Council of Legal Education and the Supreme Court. Rt. Hon. Kalu has practiced and served in public office for many years, and any questions concerning professional credentials are best resolved by the appropriate regulatory bodies.
Context of Timelines: Discussions about timelines relating to events from over a decade ago should be approached with care and proper legal context. Where questions arise, they should be handled through lawful and transparent mechanisms rather than through public conjecture.
Call for Responsible Public Engagement
Our Coalition also calls on political actors and public institutions to maintain a constructive tone in public discourse.
We respectfully encourage the Abia State Government, led by Governor Alex Otti, and all other stakeholders to prioritize governance and the welfare of the people of Abia State while allowing relevant institutions to clarify any issues that may arise.
Public communication on sensitive matters should be measured and focused on strengthening public confidence in democratic institutions.
Recognizing Contributions to Regional Development
Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu occupies a prominent national office and has been associated with several initiatives intended to support development in the South-East, including advocacy around the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) and other federal projects.
While public officials may attract scrutiny—as is normal in a democracy—it is equally important that discussions about their roles and contributions remain balanced and respectful.
Conclusion
The CCSG-PSGEJ reiterates the importance of due process, institutional verification, and responsible public discourse. We encourage all parties to allow relevant authorities to address any questions that arise, while maintaining focus on governance and development.
Our Coalition remains committed to promoting peace, accountability, and constructive engagement in Nigeria’s democratic space.
