Stop Xenophobic Attacks Now — Dr. Sami Charles Urges Urgent Action

By Joy Omagha Idam

The National Patron of the Nigerian Law Society and Chairman of the ANOG Group, Dr. Sami Charles, has strongly condemned the ongoing xenophobic attacks in South Africa, particularly those targeting Nigerians.

In a statement personally signed, Dr. Charles expressed deep concern over what he described as senseless and unprovoked violence against Nigerians, noting that many of the victims have no record of criminal activity but are being targeted solely because of their nationality.

He described the situation as “chaotic and unacceptable,” calling on relevant authorities in South Africa to take immediate steps to halt the attacks and ensure the safety of foreign nationals.

Dr. Charles also lamented what he termed a betrayal of historical solidarity, recalling Nigeria’s role in the fight against apartheid. According to him, it is disheartening that a country Nigerians once supported during its liberation struggle could now turn against them.

“It is a shame that a nation Nigeria stood for in the past would turn against those who supported them,” he said.
He further called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive diplomatic action to protect Nigerians living in South Africa.

He suggested that the Federal Government may consider advising citizens to return home if their safety cannot be guaranteed, while also exploring stronger diplomatic measures.
Commenting on developments in Mali, Dr. Charles condemned the reported killing of a defence official, describing it as barbaric and unjust, and alleging possible external influence.

He also commended Ibrahim Traoré, leader of Burkina Faso, for his efforts toward national development, urging African leaders to resist division, violence, and foreign interference.

Dr. Charles concluded by calling for unity across the continent, stressing the need for peace, cooperation, and sustainable development among African nations.
