SWS FCT Chapter Calls For End to Menstrual Stigma, Pushes for Dignity and Inclusion

By Sharon Akuboh

The Standup for Women Society (SWS), FCT Chapter, joins the global community in commemorating World Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 28, with a strong call for increased awareness, improved access to menstrual hygiene products, and the elimination of stigma surrounding menstruation.

According to Lib Mina Daniels, the Chairperson SWS FCT Chapter, Menstrual health remains a vital issue affecting the dignity, confidence, education, and overall well-being of millions of women and girls, particularly those in underserved and vulnerable communities. No girl should be denied education, suffer discrimination, or feel ashamed because of a natural biological process.

SWS FCT Chapter emphasizes the urgent need for governments, development partners, schools, healthcare institutions, and community leaders to prioritize menstrual health education and ensure that sanitary products are affordable and accessible to every girl and woman.

As advocates for women’s rights, dignity, and social inclusion, SWS FCT Chapter remains committed to promoting conversations that break harmful cultural taboos, encourage healthy menstrual practices, and support policies that protect the health and rights of women and girls across Nigeria.

This year’s commemoration serves as a reminder that menstrual hygiene is not only a health concern but also a matter of human rights, gender equality, and social justice.

SWS FCT Chapter therefore calls on all stakeholders to invest more in menstrual health initiatives and create safe, supportive environments where every girl can thrive with confidence, dignity, and without limitation.

Happy World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
