A United States-based medical expert and philanthropist, Egwu Cletus Oduburu, has urged beneficiaries of the Egwu Cletus and Cecilia Oduburu (EC&C) Foundation Scholarship Scheme to remain focused, disciplined and committed to their education, describing learning as a powerful tool for overcoming poverty, ignorance and inequality.
Oduburu gave the charge during the 2026 Scholarship Award and Disbursement Ceremony of the foundation held at Ebushike in Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where 30 undergraduate students from communities in Ezza North and other parts of the state received scholarships.
He said the beneficiaries emerged through a rigorous and transparent selection process and assured them of the foundation’s continued support throughout their academic journey.
Addressing the students, Oduburu reminded them that the scholarship was more than financial assistance, describing it as an investment in their future and a demonstration of confidence in their abilities.
“We believe in you. We believe that one day you will become doctors, engineers, teachers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, public servants and leaders who will positively impact society. When that day comes, remember to lift others just as someone has lifted you today,” he said.
The US-based nurse explained that the foundation was established to assist brilliant but financially disadvantaged students who might otherwise abandon their education due to lack of funds.
According to him, what started as a family initiative has grown into the EC&C Foundation, dedicated to nurturing dreams, developing future leaders and creating opportunities for young people.
Oduburu also appealed to the Ebonyi State Government, corporate organisations and philanthropists to assist in securing employment for graduates of the scholarship scheme.
He disclosed that the foundation had produced 22 graduates over the years, many of whom were yet to secure jobs despite their academic qualifications.
“Education alone is only part of the solution. Employment and economic opportunities are equally important. Together, we can transform scholarship recipients into productive professionals who will contribute meaningfully to our society,” he said.
He commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for expanding access to education through local and international scholarship programmes, saying the administration had demonstrated commitment to investing in the future of Ebonyi State.
Earlier, the Secretary of the Scholarship Screening Committee, Chief Patrick Igwe, warned beneficiaries against engaging in anti-social activities, stressing that any student found guilty of misconduct or poor academic performance would lose the scholarship.
He urged them to remain committed to their studies to retain the award.
Speaking at the event, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Ikeuwa Omebeh, and the Commissioner for Border Peace and Conflict Resolution, Ikechukwu Igweazi, praised Oduburu for complementing the state government’s efforts in promoting education.
They encouraged the beneficiaries to remain focused on their studies, avoid distractions and strive for academic excellence to justify the confidence reposed in them.
