A significant political shift is emerging in Ebonyi State, with key stakeholders and community leaders in Izzi Local Government Area declaring firm support for Governor Francis Nwifuru’s re-election bid in 2027.

The development comes on the heels of the high-profile defection of Chief Austin Igwe Edeze from the people’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All progressives Congress (APC), a move seen as strengthening the ruling party’s foothold in the state.

The endorsement was made during a reception held at Edeze’s community, where a large gathering of political actors and community members converged to demonstrate support for the governor’s continuity agenda.

Addressing journalists, Edeze, former BoT member of the people’s democratic party explained that his return to the APC was motivated by the need to align with the collective interest of Ebonyi people and promote political stability.

“This is beyond personal ambition. Our people are united in this direction, and what you see here reflects a commitment to peace, unity, and continuity. The 2027 election will be smooth for Governor Nwifuru,” he said.

He also pointed to the state’s informal zoning tradition, which allows each senatorial district to complete an eight-year tenure, referencing past administrations led by , the first civilian governor Senator Sam Egwu followed by chief Martin Elechi, and senator David Umahi.

“Each zone has had its full turn, and there is no justification for changing that pattern now. The governor should be allowed to complete his tenure,” he added.

The gathering also hinted at a weakening opposition structure in Izzi, with suggestions that the PDP’s presence in the area may soon diminish significantly.

While dismissing fears of one-party dominance, Edeze maintained that opposition remains a vital part of democracy but insisted that the APC’s rising popularity in Ebonyi reflects its performance and unity.

He also urged the federal government to improve inclusiveness and address security concerns, while reaffirming the state’s commitment to sustained development under the current administration.

Former member of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mrs. Francs Okpo, confirmed that leaders in the area had collectively agreed to align with the APC to foster unity and development.

“We have taken a common position to move forward together. This is about progress and avoiding unnecessary divisions. The governor deserves a smooth path to 2027,” she stated.

Community stakeholder John Nbeke from Ndeze community described the defection as a major turning point, noting that it reconnects the people with the center of political influence in the state.

“Being in opposition had its setbacks. Now, we feel reintegrated into governance, and our people are excited about this new direction,” he said.
