Mrs. Bassey Edet Enene, born into the Bassey Ewa Family of Calabar in 1900. Coming from an enlightened family, she pursued education at Duke Town School and the Presbyterian Teachers Training College at Hope Waddell Training Institution in Calabar. Her passion for education and dedication to her work led her to teach at various Methodist Institutions, including the renowned Mary Hanny Girls School in Oron.

Known for her love and discipline, Mrs. Bassey Edet Enene was affectionately called “Mmama Toffee” in the family, as she had a penchant for showering the little ones with toffees and sweets. Her nurturing nature and compassionate approach endeared her to all who knew her.

Recognizing her exceptional performance, she was awarded a scholarship to study in the United Kingdom. With her return, she brought with her not only fashionable apparel that delighted her family but also an air of sophistication. Her fur coats became objects of curiosity and fascination within the family, reflecting her timeless elegance.

Mrs. Bassey Edet Enene’s remarkable career saw her serve as a Senior Civil Servant in the Women’s Training College in Kano and later in Enugu. Her contributions to the education sector were invaluable, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of countless students she nurtured. She retired honorably from the Civil Service and returned to her beloved Calabar, where she continued to be a pillar of strength and wisdom.

On July 2, 1971, after a family celebration, she passed away, leaving a legacy of love, dedication, and grace. Her memory lives on, and she is fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.

The Bassey Enene Hostel is a tribute to the remarkable life and contributions of Mrs. Bassey Edet Enene. It represents the strength, grace, and educational values she upheld throughout her life. May every student who resides within these walls be inspired by her story and strive for excellence, just as she did.
