Yesterday, 28th of November,2025 Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ )and other partners joined Global Affairs Canada for the Presentation of Canada Investing in Women and Girls: Sights and Sounds in Nigeria.

The presentation held at the Abuja Continental Hotel provided an insightful overview of Canada’s strategic efforts to promote gender equality and empower women and girls in Nigeria.
The event began with an introductory address highlighting the crucial role of women and girls in fostering sustainable development. Representatives from Global Affairs Canada outlined the scope of Canada’s investment programs designed to support education, health, economic empowerment, and leadership opportunities for Nigerian women and girls.

Key points from the presentation included detailed explanations of various projects funded by Canada, focusing on improving access to quality education for girls, combating gender-based violence, and enhancing women’s participation in political and economic spheres. Success stories from local Nigerian communities illustrated the tangible impacts of these initiatives.
NAWOJ was not left out in the Presentation as the President, Aishatu Ibrahim highlited the impact of working on the Women Voice and Leadership Project. A project funded by Global Affairs Canada through Action aid Nigeria.
She pointed out that through the project, NAWOJ was able to get an office to serve as a National Secretariat after 33 years of it’s existence, employed a program and finance officer for the first time, developed organisational policies,Built Capacity for NAWOJ executive,Appointed and inaugurated board members, developed a five year strategic work plan,Staged a protest between one Professor Cyril Ndifon- a lecturer from the University of Calabar who was accused of sexual molestation,encouraged grass roots Women in Ondo and Edo States on political participation,trained Journalists on GBV reporting amongst others. The President noted that all of these were achieved in only 15 months of being on the project.
The presentation also emphasized collaboration with Nigerian government agencies, civil society organizations, and grassroots groups to ensure that the investments align with local needs and foster community ownership.
The event served as a significant platform to reaffirm Canada’s commitment to gender equality and to strengthen bilateral cooperation aimed at empowering Nigerian women and girls through sustainable development initiatives.
