Minimum wage Saga : Varsity Don Begs Ebonyi Workers to Return to Work

A University Don and former Member of the Federal House of Representatives, Professor Amos Nworie, has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Ebonyi Government workers to suspend the ongoing One-Week industrial action embarked upon.

Professor Nworie appealed in a statement in Abakaliki, urging the Striking workers to allow the state government to address their demands and find a resolution to the ongoing impasse.

According to Professor Nworie, the strike action has resulted in unprecedented hardship for the people of Ebonyi State, particularly the vulnerable ones.

The University Don noted that the strike would disrupt economic activities in the state, thereby leading to loss of revenue and other socio-economic challenges if allowed to continue.

According to the statement, suspending the industrial action will offer a window of opportunity for the parties to engage in constructive dialogue.

The Statement commends Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State in his avowed commitment to addressing the yearnings and aspirations of Ebonyi people through the People’s Charter of Needs Policy of his administration, citing the payment of arrears of gratuities and pensions of retirees since the creation of Ebonyi State, Wage award of #20,000, provision of CNG Buses and #100,000 Christmas bonuses among other incentives as evidence of the Governor’s prioritization of Workers welfare and as such urges NLC to engage government in constructive dialogue to resolve the issues in contention.

The Statement reminds Ebonyi Workers that since Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru came on board May last year, many policies and programmes geared towards creating a favourable environment for them to operate have been initiated and therefore called on the Workers to join hands with the State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru to actualize the People’s Charter of Needs Policy of his administration in the interest of all.
