In a significant move to promote gender equality and amplify women’s voices in the media, the Federal Government, through the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF), and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) FCT Chapter, has empowered 100 female journalists with skills to enhance their roles in the newsrooms across the country.

The one-day capacity building training, themed “Workplace Diversification: Advancing Female Journalists’ Role in the Newsroom,” was a resounding success, with participants from across the country sharing experiences, learning from experts, and building networks.

Didi Esther Walson-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, emphasized the importance of workplace diversification, stating, “When women sit at the table, institutions make better decisions, stories become richer, and the national narrative becomes more complete.”

The training covered a range of topics, including Amplifying Women’s Voices in Leadership, Balancing Work Responsibilities & the Home Front, and Leadership & Career Growth for Women Journalists. Digital skills training was also provided, covering topics such as Mobile Journalism, Social Media, and AI Tools.

Grace Ike, Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, praised the initiative, saying, “Voices of women in journalism can no longer be pushed aside, ignored, or silenced. We must work together to create a more inclusive and diverse newsroom environment.”

The National Chairperson NAWOJ, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, who was ably represented by Chairman NUJ FCT hailed the Head of Civil Service for timely training of Women journalists. She called on members of NAWOJ to take advantage of the one day capacity training to learn and share experiences.

The initiative is part of NAWOJ’s efforts to promote women’s participation in media leadership and bridge gaps in decision-making and editorial positions. The training was designed to equip female journalists with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in the media industry and promote a more inclusive and diverse newsroom environment.

As the media landscape continues to evolve, initiatives like this are crucial in promoting gender equality and empowering women to take on leadership roles in the industry.
