The wife of the Governor of Ebonyi State, Mrs. Mary‑Maudline Uzoamaka Ogbonna Nwifuru, has officially commissioned a newly constructed home for a widow in Obuchie Amajim, Ameka Village, Ezza South Local Government Area.

The project, executed through the Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced Persons Foundation (BERWO), the First Lady’s pet project, is part of a broader mission to uplift vulnerable women across the state.

The newly built three-bedroom bungalow is designed to offer safe, dignified shelter to Mrs. Nwuka Nike Nwankwo, a widow carefully selected from the community. The project reflects months of collaboration between BERWO, the Ebonyi State Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, and key development partners.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Mrs. Nwifu emphasised the moral and civic duty to care for widows, saying: “Today, we stand not just on bricks and mortar, but on love, compassion, and shared humanity. This home is an enduring testament to our commitment to those who have lost so much, yet remain pillars of strength in our communities.”

She reiterated her foundation’s commitment to addressing the needs of rural women and other marginalised groups in the state.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Francis Ori, praised the First Lady for her compassionate leadership and commitment to the welfare of women. He applauded the BERWO Foundation and the contractors for their roles in actualising the vision.

An emotional Mrs. Nwankwo expressed deep gratitude to the First Lady, saying she never imagined such a blessing would come her way in her old age. She offered heartfelt prayers for divine protection and favour upon Mrs. Nwifuru and her family.

The project is one of several people-centred initiatives under BERWO aimed at promoting inclusive development and restoring dignity to the underserved across Ebonyi State.
