NAWOJ Mourns The Death of Dr Doyin Abiola

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has received with great sadness the news of the demise of Dr. Doyin Abiola, a renowned journalist who died on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the age of 82.

This was contained in a press release issued by the National Secretary Wasilah Ladan

NAWOJ National Chairperson Hajia Aisha Ibrahim described the late Dr Abiola as a trailblazer in every sense, breaking down barriers for women in journalism and leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s media landscape.

Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim highlighted some of her achievements as follows

– First Nigerian woman to become editor and managing director/editor-in-chief of a national daily newspaper.

  • Founding editor of National Concord newspaper, established by her husband, Chief MKO Abiola-
  • Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of National Concord from 1986-
  • Chairperson, Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA) nomination panel
  • Member, Advisory Council for the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences at Ogun State University

The NAWOJ Boss said Dr Abiola’s legacy is defined by courage, professionalism, and a steadfast dedication to truth and public service.

During her lifetime, Dr Doyin Abiola inspired generations of journalists, especially women, to lead with conviction in a male-dominated field. Her contributions to journalism education and media development in Nigeria are immeasurable.

She further stated that Dr. Abiola’s passing has drawn tributes from across the media landscape and beyond. Her quiet strength, dignity, and resilience in the face of adversity, particularly during her husband’s incarceration following the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, earned her widespread admiration.

She prays for the repose of her gentle soul. May God comfort her immediate family, and friends.
