Federal Government urges all parties to respect international law and protect civilians

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed serious concern over the recent attack carried out by Houthi militia against civilian targets in the Najran Region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, calling for an immediate de-escalation of hostilities and renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja, on Friday, August 7, 2026, Nigeria condemned the attack, which reportedly resulted in injuries to several civilians, including women and children.
The Nigerian Government described the incident as a reprehensible act and a violation of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law, particularly the obligation to protect civilians during armed conflicts.
According to the Federal Government, attacks targeting civilian populations and infrastructure are unacceptable, regardless of the party responsible.
Nigeria Calls for Maximum Restraint
Nigeria reaffirmed its opposition to the escalation of violence in the region, urging all parties involved to exercise maximum restraint and respect international law.
The Federal Government stressed that the protection of innocent civilians must remain a priority in any conflict and called on all parties to avoid actions capable of further worsening the humanitarian and security situation.
Nigeria also called for the intensification of diplomatic engagements aimed at achieving a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Peaceful Resolution Remains the Priority
The Federal Government urged renewed diplomatic efforts that would respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of all States in the region.
It maintained that dialogue and diplomacy remain essential to achieving lasting peace and stability in the Gulf and the wider Middle East.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further disclosed that Nigeria was closely monitoring developments in the region and would continue working with regional and international partners in support of peace, security and stability.
The latest position reinforces Nigeria’s long-standing call for the protection of civilians and the peaceful resolution of international conflicts through dialogue, diplomacy and respect for international law.
