The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended warm congratulations to the Government and people of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia on the occasion of the country’s National Day celebration, observed annually on May 28, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria described the celebration as a significant moment in the history of Ethiopia, honouring the country’s enduring sovereignty, resilience, unity, and commitment to national progress as Africa’s oldest independent nation.
Nigeria commended Ethiopia for its enduring contributions to African unity and continental development, particularly its strategic role as host of the Headquarters of the African Union (AU). The Federal Government also acknowledged Ethiopia’s sustained efforts in promoting regional peace, multilateral diplomacy, dialogue, and African integration.
The statement noted that Nigeria and Ethiopia, as two of Africa’s most populous and influential countries, share a longstanding relationship built on friendship, solidarity, and a common vision for a peaceful and prosperous Africa.
According to the Ministry, the bilateral relationship between Abuja and Addis Ababa remains strong and multifaceted, anchored on mutual commitments to continental stability, economic growth, and regional cooperation.
Nigeria further applauded the growing economic collaboration between both nations, especially the investments of Dangote Industries in Ethiopia’s cement and fertilizer sectors, describing the partnership as transformative and beneficial to both economies.
The Federal Government also expressed optimism about finalising additional agreements and partnerships across critical sectors to further strengthen economic and trade relations between the two countries.
Reaffirming Nigeria’s solidarity with Ethiopia, the statement praised the country’s ongoing domestic reforms and its stabilising role in the Horn of Africa.
Nigeria expressed confidence that the strategic partnership between both nations would continue to flourish under the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), fostering greater trade, investment opportunities, and shared prosperity across the continent.
“Once again, Nigeria extends heartfelt felicitations to the Government and resilient people of Ethiopia on this important national occasion,” the statement added.
The statement was signed by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, anipr, on Thursday, May 28, 2026.
