Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting democratic governance, regional cooperation and stronger diplomatic ties across Africa following the re-election of President Carlos Vila Nova of the Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe.

In a message of goodwill issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Government congratulated President Vila Nova on securing a second term in office, describing the outcome of the election as another affirmation of the country’s dedication to democratic principles and constitutional governance.

Beyond extending congratulations, Nigeria used the occasion to commend the people of São Tomé and Príncipe for conducting themselves peacefully throughout the electoral process. The government noted that the calm and orderly exercise reflected the political maturity, civic responsibility and respect for the rule of law demonstrated by citizens in strengthening democratic institutions within the island nation.

The congratulatory message also underscored Nigeria’s longstanding foreign policy objective of supporting democratic stability across Africa. As one of the continent’s leading advocates of peace, constitutional order and regional integration, Nigeria reaffirmed its solidarity with both the government and people of São Tomé and Príncipe.

According to the Ministry, the relationship between the two countries has continued to be built on mutual respect, friendship and cooperation, values that have strengthened bilateral engagements over the years. Nigeria expressed confidence that President Vila Nova’s renewed mandate would provide fresh opportunities to deepen collaboration in areas that advance the interests of both nations.

Among the priority areas identified for enhanced cooperation are regional peace and security, economic development and the consolidation of democratic institutions across the African continent. These sectors remain central to Africa’s broader aspirations for sustainable development, political stability and inclusive growth.

Nigeria further expressed optimism that the renewed administration in São Tomé and Príncipe would continue to contribute meaningfully to efforts aimed at fostering unity, prosperity and collective progress within the region.

As President Carlos Vila Nova begins his second term, the Federal Government conveyed its best wishes for a successful tenure, expressing hope that his administration would deliver lasting peace, stability and economic advancement for the people of São Tomé and Príncipe.

The message reflects Nigeria’s enduring commitment to strengthening partnerships with fellow African nations and advancing a shared vision of a peaceful, democratic and prosperous continent through constructive diplomacy and mutual cooperation.
