As the President of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV), I am honored to reflect on the historic journey of women in politics in the United States. From the suffragettes’ fight for the right to vote to the present day, women have made tremendous strides in breaking down barriers and shattering glass ceilings.

The nomination of Senator Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s candidate for President is a testament to the progress made in the fight for gender equality and women’s political empowerment in America. This achievement stands on the shoulders of women like Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to Congress, and Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman to run for Vice President as well as Hillary Clinton who’s fierce presidential contest with Trump is still the closest an American woman has gone towards the number one seat of the United States White House.
This momentous decision is a beacon of hope and inspiration for women in politics worldwide, including Nigeria. It demonstrates that with persistence and dedication, women can shatter glass ceilings and achieve greatness. We commend President Biden for his bold step in promoting gender inclusion and diversity in leadership.
Throughout history, women have faced discrimination, marginalization, and exclusion from political spaces. However, they have persisted, and their determination has led to significant milestones. The endorsement of Senator Harris by President Biden is a nod to the struggles and triumphs of women in politics.
As we celebrate this achievement, we recognize the impact it will have on women and girls everywhere. It shows that with hard work, determination, and support, women can achieve greatness. We commend President Biden for his leadership and commitment to gender equality, and we urge Nigerian politicians to follow suit.
Nigeria has its history of women’s political struggles and achievements. From Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Laila Dogonyaro to Chimamanda Adichie, Nigerian women have played a crucial role in shaping our country’s political landscape. However, there is still much work to be done to achieve gender parity in politics.
NILOWV remains dedicated to advocating for women’s rights and political inclusion in Nigeria. We will continue to work tirelessly to create a level playing field for women in politics, inspired by the strides made in the United States. We believe that women’s participation in politics is essential for building a more just and equitable society.
We encourage Nigerian politicians to seize this moment and work towards creating a more inclusive political landscape. Let us strive to build a Nigeria where women can aspire to leadership positions without facing discrimination or barriers. Together, we can achieve greatness and build a better future for all.

Once again, we congratulate Senator Kamala Harris and the women of America on this historic achievement as we wish her victory at the polls. May this milestone inspire us all to work towards a more gender-inclusive world.
