Abuja, Nigeria — The Vice President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Zone D (North Central), Alhaji Adeiza Momohjimoh, has expressed concern over the reported arrest and detention of the Editor of Kogi Reports, Mr. Opeyemi Owoeye, by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kogi State.

In a statement issued on behalf of the zone, Momohjimoh said reports surrounding the incident have generated public interest and raised important questions about the protection of press freedom and the role of security agencies within Nigeria’s democratic framework.
The NUJ Zone D emphasized the need for security institutions to remain professional, impartial, and guided by the rule of law in the discharge of their duties. According to the statement, agencies established with public resources must operate within their statutory mandates and avoid actions that could create the perception of being used to advance private or political interests.
The union noted that disagreements arising from media publications should, where necessary, be addressed through established legal processes. It stressed that Nigeria’s democratic system provides lawful channels through which individuals who feel aggrieved by media reports can seek redress.
The statement further called on public office holders and political actors to promote an environment that supports freedom of expression, transparency, and accountability, which are fundamental pillars of democratic governance.
While reaffirming its commitment to responsible journalism, the NUJ Zone D expressed concern that actions perceived as intimidating members of the media could have a chilling effect on press freedom and public confidence in democratic institutions.
The union therefore appealed to the Commandant-General of the NSCDC to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that all actions taken by officers conform to constitutional provisions, professional standards, and the rule of law.
Momohjimoh reiterated that the NUJ remains committed to defending press freedom, promoting ethical journalism, and safeguarding the constitutional rights of citizens. He urged all stakeholders to work together in strengthening democratic values and ensuring that journalists are able to carry out their professional responsibilities without fear or undue interference.
