Pay Your Taxes To Sustain Abuja’s Infrastructure – Wike

By Remi Johnson

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has made a passionate appeal to Abuja residents to fulfill their civic responsibility by paying taxes, stressing that sustainable infrastructure development in the nation’s capital depends on it.

Wike made the call during the commissioning of the newly completed Arterial Road N5, a key project linking critical parts of Abuja, including the city center and surrounding communities.

Wike underscored the importance of tax compliance, warning that without revenue from taxes, continued infrastructural development would be impossible.

“We cannot survive without people paying their taxes. It is not to embarrass anyone, but to ensure we grow and develop as a city. If we don’t get the taxes, we will not be able to invite Mr. President to inaugurate any project,” he said

The Minister noted that the road which was awarded by the Federal Executive Council in September last year and flagged off in October, has progressed swiftly due to proper planning and funding.

He emphasized that the successful delivery of the project was only possible because the Tinubu-led administration ensured timely compensation to affected residents, including non-indigenes, a gesture Wike described as ‘just and inclusive.’

“We had serious issues with compensation. Some people said non-indigenes shouldn’t be paid, but I said, not under this administration. If someone is losing their home for public development, they deserve to be compensated,” Wike affirmed.

“Your Excellency, Mr. President, we appreciate you for identifying with the Federal Capital Territory by coming to inaugurate this Arterial Road N5,”

Wike who acknowledged the sacrifices of residents that had lost their ancestral homes to the project, extended his appreciation for their cooperation, reiterating that urban development often comes with difficult trade-offs.

He also commended the National Assembly for its overwhelming support, highlighting the strong synergy between the executive and legislative arms in making Abuja a model city.

“Mr. President has opened up the entire Abuja, but he won’t do it with his blood. We must all contribute by obeying the laws and fulfilling our obligations,” Wike declared.

According to Wike, with the commissioning of the Arterial Road N5, traffic in the area will be greatly eased
