The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi State has disclosed that the state recorded 15 road traffic crashes between December 2025 and January 2026.
The Sector Commander of the corps in the state, Mr. Daniel Nnamdi Asoanya, made this known in Abakaliki during an interview with journalists.
Asoanya said that a total of 109 persons were involved in the crashes, with 35 sustaining varying degrees of injuries, while one fatality was recorded.
He attributed the crashes mainly to over-speeding and dangerous driving, noting that the Corps intensified patrols and deployments across the state during the yuletide period.
According to him, all six unit commands of the FRSC in Ebonyi State were fully mobilised for operations, with officers deployed to major junctions and crash-prone areas. “We closed down many other activities except operations. Everybody was on operation. We deployed our personnel to different junctions and critical areas where there are regular incidences of road traffic crashes,” he said.
The Sector Commander explained that despite the volume of travel during the festive season, the number of crashes recorded was relatively low. “So far, it has been good. We did not have so many cases of crashes. We only recorded 15 road crashes across the state from December till date. A total of 109 persons were involved, 35 were injured, and we recorded only one fatality, a male adult,” Asoanya stated.
He further identified speed violations as the major cause of accidents, especially along routes undergoing construction. “There is a lot of construction work going on along the Enugu–Abakaliki road. Some drivers, who are mindless of these constructions, drive at excessive speed, leading to collisions and vehicles running into stationary objects,” he explained.
Asoanya also listed dangerous driving as another contributing factor, stressing that excessive speed often results in loss of control. “Once you are over-speeding, your driving becomes dangerous. At excessive speed, the vehicle controls the driver, not the driver controlling the vehicle,” he said.
He described the Enugu–Abakaliki–Ogoja Expressway, which he noted is an international route, as the most dangerous road in the state and urged motorists to exercise caution.
