🏀 Global Vote of Confidence : Kida’s Leadership Secures FIBA Backing as Nigeria Rises in World Basketball Ranking

By Joy Omagha Idam

The leadership of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) under President Engr. Musa Ahmed Kida has received a major international boost, following formal recognition by the sport’s global governing body, FIBA.

In a letter dated March 16, 2026, FIBA officially affirmed the Kida-led administration as the legitimate authority overseeing basketball in Nigeria. The body also fixed October 15, 2026, as the deadline for the federation’s next elective congress—effectively putting to rest long-standing governance disputes.

This development signals renewed global confidence in the direction of Nigerian basketball under Kida’s stewardship.

The endorsement comes amid impressive performances on the international stage, particularly by Nigeria’s women’s national team, D’Tigress. The team is now ranked 8th in the latest FIBA World Rankings, reflecting consistent investment, strategic planning, and competitive excellence.

Nigeria’s position alongside global heavyweights such as the United States, France, and Australia highlights the growing strength and credibility of its basketball program.

Despite years of administrative challenges and international sanctions, the NBBF under Kida has achieved notable stability since 2022. FIBA acknowledged its close monitoring of the federation since 2017, noting that recent progress points to a more structured and credible system.

Support has also come from the National Sports Commission, with Director General Bukola Olopade urging stakeholders to align with FIBA’s decision, describing it as a turning point for unity within the basketball community.

For many observers, FIBA’s recognition combined with Nigeria’s rising global ranking strengthens the argument for continuity in leadership. Kida’s tenure has not only restored international credibility but also delivered tangible success on the court.

With elections expected after the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in September, attention is shifting to the federation’s future. Stakeholders will weigh the gains recorded under the current administration against the need to sustain growth.

As Nigeria approaches another electoral cycle, the momentum built under Musa Ahmed Kida—bolstered by global recognition and competitive achievement—positions him as a key figure in the continued development of basketball in the country.
