The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Aviation and Transport Technology, Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to operational excellence at the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, announcing plans for the training of airport staff and the commissioning of airline traffic lights.

Speaking to journalists in Abakaliki after an engagement with the State House of Assembly Committee on Public Accounts, Obichukwu praised Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru for his relentless push to ensure the airport operates efficiently and to global standards.

“I’m always encouraged when the Assembly invites us it reminds us that we are being watched and that we must be transparent, prudent, and accountable,” she said.

Describing aviation as one of the most capital-intensive ministries, she noted that while results may not be immediate, the benefits will unfold in due time.

“The legislators are pleased with our progress, especially the increasing flight movement, which helps to promote the airport,” she added.

The Commissioner disclosed that night flight operations would soon commence with the installation of airline traffic lights, a key infrastructure currently lacking. “Once the installation is complete, we’ll have evening flight operations,” she assured.

On the much-anticipated Ebonyi Airline PLC, Obichukwu explained that the ministry has completed necessary CAC registrations for board members and stakeholders, which are prerequisites for securing the Air Transport License (ATL).

“Without the ATL, we can’t proceed to acquire the aircraft. But we’ve made substantial progress we’ve concluded processes with the DSS and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation,” she revealed.

Obichukwu that aircraft acquisition is a technical and highly regulated process. “It’s not like buying a refrigerator from the market. Once we identify a suitable aircraft, professionals from FAAN, NCAA, and other aviation bodies will inspect and verify its airworthiness,” she explained.

She concluded by commending Governor Nwifuru’s unwavering determination: “Once he sets his mind to something, nothing stops him. We are confident that Ebonyi will soon boast of a fully functional state-owned airline.”
