An appeal has been made to the state government to establish a recreational center for the older persons in Taraba State.
The Commissioner Ministry of Social Justice and Re- Integration Dr Filister Irarimam Musa made the appeal in her address at the 2024 International Day of Older Persons, held at the Pastoral Center, Mile Six, Jalingo.

“I respectfully appeal to the Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas to consider the establishment of a dedicated recreational center for the older persons. Such facility will serve as a vibrant and dynamic space where our senior citizens can engage in socialization, partake in lifelong learning opportunities and enjoy various forms of entertainment.
“Further more, I humbly appeal to the Governor for the creation of a specialized care center tailored to meet the unique needs of our older population.
According to her, the center will ensure comprehensive access to essential health care services, including routine medical check – ups, counseling and social support, adding that by doing so, the government will empower the older persons to live healthier, more dignified lives while also promoting their independence and self reliance.
“I advocate for the prioritization of our older persons health and wellbeing, which artfully combines medical and legal considerations with personal and spiritual needs.
“Equally, may I also plead with the Governor on behalf of the older persons to consider subsidizing their treatment costs at government health care facilities.
“This Financial support would alleviate the burdens many older persons face and ensure they receive the quality care they deserve without compromising their financial security.
The Commissioner, reaffirm the Ministry’s commitment to nurturing and exclusive environment that truly value and respect the experiences and wisdom of the older persons.
She urge people to change the negative stereotypes often associated with ageing and promote positive narrative that highlight the vital roles older persons continue to play in the society from mentoring younger generations to engaging in community service.
“Together, let’s continue to support and celebrate our older population, ensuring that they feel valued and embraced in the fabric of our community – She said.
In his remarks, the Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, assured them of improved welfare and general well-being.
Projections indicate that by 2050, the global population of individuals aged 65 and above will exceed 1.6 billion, which will lead to significant challenges and unique opportunities.
These projections according to the Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, will compel the State Government to re-evaluate and potentially transform the social, economic, and healthcare systems of the state to better serve this growing demography.
Represented by the Taraba State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Aminu Abdullahi Alkali, the Governor said the international Day of the Older Persons is particularly significant, as it serves as a powerful reminder of the vital roles senior citizens play in the development of the society.
According to the Governor, the Taraba State Government acknowledges the efforts of the the United Nations, which plays a crucial role in promoting not only the dignity but also the well-being of older persons around the globe.
He therefore assured that the state Government will wholeheartedly support these efforts by putting up policies geared towards promoting the interests and well-being of the elderly people.
He said in Taraba State, the Government takes pride in the meaningful strides it has so far recorded in supporting the senior citizens through the implementation of series of initiatives, including the free education programme aimed at promoting life long learning as well as comprehensive healthcare initiatives designed to enhance quality of lives of the people especially the older persons.
Dr Ayuba Gagare presented a paper on Health talk, Associate Professor Joel Nsofor of the Department of Sociology, Taraba State University, presented his paper on the role of aging in the community while Dr Julius Usman presented a goodwill message from the National Director, Senior Citizens Center, Abuja, commending Governor Agbu Kefas for his commitment in addressing the plight of the elderly persons in the state.
“Aging with Dignity” is the theme of the occasion.
The Senior Citizens presented an award of excellence to the Governor of Taraba State, Dr Agbu Kefas for his humanitarian services to the people.
