NUJ FCT Chairman Advocates Mental Health Support for Journalists at 2026 Health Walk

The Chairman of Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has called for greater attention to the mental health and wellbeing of journalists working in high-pressure environments.

Speaking during the 2026 NUJ Health Walk held as part of the Press Week activities in Abuja, Ike said the theme, “Mental Health and Stress Management in High-Pressure Work Environments,” reflects the daily realities faced by media professionals.

She noted that journalists in Abuja often work under intense pressure, including late-night deadlines, exposure to danger, fake news challenges, and confrontations with public officials while striving to report accurate stories.
According to her, the stress associated with the profession can negatively affect both mental and physical health if not properly managed.

Comrade Ike described the Health Walk as more than just an exercise programme, saying it provides an opportunity for journalists to relax, build strength, and encourage one another.
“As we walk together through the streets of Abuja, let’s share our worries, laugh, and plan better days. Simple steps like this can fight burnout and keep us sharp for the job we love,” she said.

She stressed the importance of self-care among journalists, urging union members to adopt healthy habits such as taking breaks during work, seeking counselling when necessary, drinking enough water, and getting adequate rest.

“We must be alive for our stories to be heard or read,” she stated.
The NUJ chairman also pledged to continue engaging media organizations and relevant authorities on the need for improved welfare, counseling services, safer workspaces, and better work-life balance for journalists.

She commended the Press Week Organising Committee for a successful event and appreciated sponsors and participants for supporting the initiative.
Ike encouraged journalists to remain united and committed to staying healthy, happy, and prepared to continue serving the nation through responsible journalism.

Weekenders magazine commends The leadership of NUJ FCT and wish members all the best.
