The Embassy of Sweden in Abuja commemorated the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sweden and Nigeria with a colourful celebration that highlighted decades of friendship, cooperation, cultural exchange, and shared aspirations between the two nations.

Speaking at the event, the Swedish Ambassador to Nigeria, Anna Westerholm, described Sweden’s National Day as more than a celebration of culture and tradition, noting that it is also a reflection of the values that define the Scandinavian nation, including democracy, equality, human dignity, openness, solidarity, and inclusion.
According to the Ambassador, these values have continued to shape Sweden’s engagement with Nigeria over the past six and a half decades. She emphasized that despite being geographically distant, both countries share strong connections driven by creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship, and mutual respect.

The Ambassador acknowledged the contributions of Nigerians living in Sweden, noting that although the Nigerian community is relatively small, its impact is significant. She cited the achievements of Nigerian students, researchers, healthcare professionals, technology experts, entrepreneurs, and cultural ambassadors, particularly within Sweden’s thriving music industry where Afrobeats has gained remarkable popularity.

She also highlighted the longstanding presence of Swedish companies in Nigeria since the early 1960s, noting their contributions through investments, expertise, technology transfer, and job creation. Describing Nigeria’s youthful population and vibrant innovation ecosystem as inspiring, she reaffirmed Sweden’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.

“In a world facing growing uncertainty and division, partnerships built on trust, dialogue, and mutual respect are more important than ever,” the Ambassador stated.
The envoy further reaffirmed Sweden’s dedication to democracy, international law, human rights, and multilateral cooperation, while stressing the country’s commitment to addressing global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and public health alongside international partners.
The celebration also featured the recognition of embassy staff members Fredrik and Sofie, who will be concluding their assignments in Nigeria this summer. The Ambassador praised their professionalism, dedication, and valuable contributions toward strengthening relations between both countries.

A major highlight of the evening was the presentation of an award to Moyosoreoluwa Adeyeye, winner of the Sweden-Nigeria 65th Anniversary Logo Competition. The winning design was commended for its creativity, strong visual identity, and modern representation of the enduring friendship between the two nations.
The event also showcased a special musical collaboration involving Fryshuset, a Swedish youth-focused cultural and educational organization, the Embassy of Sweden, and Chocolate City, one of Nigeria’s leading music labels. The project, organizers said, symbolizes the creativity, friendship, and shared aspirations that continue to unite Sweden and Nigeria.
Permanent Secretary, Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed, joined the Swedish Ambassador in cutting the colourful anniversary cake, while guests raised a toast to peace, understanding, and continued cooperation between the people of both countries.
The celebration concluded with a special musical performance marking the historic milestone and reinforcing the enduring bond between Sweden and Nigeria after 65 years of diplomatic engagement. The young Nigerian who hit the music arena with “Samu Kudin ka Kakashe” a survivor of bandits attack in Borno state. Members of the diplomatic community showed solidarity to Sweden.
Ambassador Ahmed commended the smooth relations that has existed between the two nations and conveyed the best wishes of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
