Nigeria and the Holy See have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations, promoting peace, dialogue, religious harmony and sustainable development as both parties marked five decades of diplomatic engagement.

The renewed commitment was made on Monday in Abuja when the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, received the Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations of the Holy See, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, during a courtesy visit.

The minister also commended the Catholic Church for its enduring contributions to Nigeria’s national development, particularly in education, healthcare, humanitarian services, peacebuilding and community development. According to her, the Church has remained a reliable partner in fostering social cohesion and improving the welfare of communities across the country.

The meeting also focused on regional and global issues of mutual concern, including Nigeria’s security situation and its impact on citizens and faith-based institutions.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu outlined the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to improve national security through increased recruitment of security personnel, enhanced inter-agency collaboration and sustained initiatives aimed at addressing the root causes of insecurity.

They stressed the need for stronger collaboration among government, faith-based organisations and civil society in fostering peaceful coexistence and combating violent extremism.

Archbishop Gallagher further praised the vibrancy of the Catholic Church in Nigeria and expressed appreciation for the increasing contributions of Nigerian clergy and diplomats within the Holy See. He welcomed the growing Nigerian diplomatic and ecclesiastical presence at the Vatican, expressing confidence that it would further strengthen bilateral relations.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the partnership, Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu expressed optimism that cooperation between both sides would continue to advance regional peace, humanitarian initiatives, intercultural understanding, human dignity and sustainable development.
