In a shocking display of disregard for democratic principles and judicial authority, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has been suspended for six months by the Nigerian Senate. This unjust decision not only silences the voice of a duly elected senator but also undermines the trust of the people who entrusted her with their mandate.

The suspension is a clear violation of both parliamentary ethics and judicial authority. A court had issued an order to halt any disciplinary action against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, yet the Senate proceeded in blatant defiance. This action disregards democratic principles, is legally excessive, and threatens women’s inclusion in leadership positions.
The Injustice at Hand
- Defiance of the Rule of Law: The Senate ignored a court order to halt disciplinary action against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.
- Disregard for Democratic Principles: The suspension silences the voice of a duly elected senator and undermines the trust of her constituents.
- Legally Excessive: The six-month suspension exceeds the Senate’s own rules, which permit a maximum 14-day suspension.
- Threat to Women’s Inclusion: The suspension sends a chilling message to women in leadership positions and those aspiring to serve their country.
Demands for Justice

The Coalition for Women in Governance demands:
- Immediate Reinstatement: The Senate must reverse the unjust suspension and restore Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s rights.
- Respect for the Judiciary: The Senate must uphold the law, not undermine it.
- Empowerment of Women: The space for women in leadership must be expanded, not restricted through intimidation and exclusion.
- Accountability: The Senate leadership must be held accountable for this reckless abuse of power.
Dr Jophia Nanker Gupar a strong member of the Coalition maintained that the Senate must urgently recall back Senator Natasha AKPOTI UDUAGHAN unconditionally as she had not violated any rules.
The suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is a test of Nigeria’s democracy. Will the nation stand up for justice, or will it allow the silencing of a woman’s voice? The answer lies in the actions of the Nigerian people. Let’s keep watching and see how it plays out.
